This week my colleague Katherine Hadda, the U.S. Consul General in Hyderabad, was on hand at Paradip Port in the Indian state of Odisha to welcome the first in a series of new shipments of U.S. crude oil to India. Consul General Hadda was joined by Indian Ministry of External Affairs Americas Division Joint Secretary Munu Mahawar and Ministry for Petroleum and Natural Gas Joint Secretary for International Cooperation Sunjay Sudhir.

Increased Indian purchases of U.S. crude oil are a direct outcome of the June visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House, during which the leaders committed to expanding and elevating bilateral energy cooperation through a Strategic Energy Partnership.

Our U.S. diplomats in India are dedicated to enhancing our energy cooperation with India, to include plans for cleaner fossil fuels, renewables, nuclear power, and cutting-edge storage and energy-efficiency technologies. We expect this first shipment of crude oil will be followed by many more as both the Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum have placed orders for over 2 million barrels from the United States. U.S. crude oil shipments to India have the potential to boost bilateral trade by up to $2 billion.

During the visit in June, President Trump affirmed that the United States continues to remove barriers to energy development and investment in the United States and to U.S. energy exports so that more natural gas, clean coal, and renewable resources and technologies are available to fuel India’s economic growth and inclusive development. Not only does this week’s shipment demonstrate the strength of the U.S.-India bilateral relationship, but also how our relationship with India continues to benefit the American economy.
