Secretary Michael R. Pompeo hosted the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) +2 Ministerial today on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Secretary thanked the foreign ministers for their partnership with the United States and emphasized the importance of regional coordination to confront the region’s challenges, including through multilateral initiatives such as the International Maritime Security Construct and the Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA).  The Secretary praised the territorial defeat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria but warned that ISIS remains a threat and vigilance is still necessary.

The Secretary and the foreign ministers discussed the growing challenges that Russia and China present to the region’s stability and security.  Participants agreed on the need to bring peace and stability to Syria and Yemen and to ensure a secure and prosperous Iraq.  The GCC and the United States stressed the need to counter Iran’s destabilizing behavior in the region.

The Secretary and the foreign ministers had productive discussions on MESA – based on a united GCC – to advance prosperity, security, and stability in the region. The Secretary looks forward to continuing these discussions over the coming weeks and months.
