Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met yesterday with Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. Secretary Pompeo welcomed President Tokayev’s engagement with civil society and encouraged the Government of Kazakhstan to implement reforms to strengthen the protection of fundamental freedoms and to counter human trafficking.
The Secretary also welcomed the recent signing of an Open Skies civil air transport agreement, which will lead to greater cooperation and business opportunities in aviation, transportation, and logistics sectors. Secretary Pompeo commended President Tokayev for Kazakhstan’s continued global leadership in the repatriation and reintegration of its citizens from Syria and Iraq as well as welcomed Kazakhstan’s support for Afghanistan’s economic and political development. The Secretary discussed with the President U.S. concerns over the human rights crisis in Xinjiang and the importance of providing refuge to those who have fled detention camps in China.
