We appreciate the efforts of Malian, French, and United Nations peacekeeping forces in responding to the attack and securing the compound.

President Trump commended Prime Minister Trudeau for Canada’s recent announcement that it will increase military spending by 70 percent over the next decade. President Trump underscored the solid alliance that the United States enjoys with Canada.
The United States has recently been made aware of new reports of the Congolese government engaging in severe human rights violations in the Kasai regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The latest report accuses the Congolese military of actively engaging in increased human rights violations, including summary executions of women and children and mass rape.

At the direction of the President, the Department of State has secured the release of Otto Warmbier from North Korea. Mr. Warmbier is en route to the United States, where he will be reunited with his family. The Department of State continues to have discussions with the DPRK regarding three other U.S. citizens reported detained.
